Seattle-King County Community Response Team
Assistance for businesses and workers experiencing plant closures and other worker dislocation
Organized in 1989, the backbone of King County's Rapid Response system to worker dislocation is an innovative team made up of representatives from the King County Dislocated Worker Program/WorkSource, the Employment Security Department, the State Board of Community & Technical Colleges AND organized labor through the Worker Center, AFL-CIO. The Seattle-King County Community Response Team is the locally coordinated, community based partnership which acts as a portable one-stop center, taking the integrated services of WorkSource Washington and a wide variety of community partners on-site to companies and workers in the midst of layoffs.
Team members travel to affected workplaces to help the company establish an on-site Reemployment Committee made up of management, union representatives and affected workers who then identify services and organize to deliver assistance before the final layoff date. Services often include pre-layoff orientations, early intervention services, reemployment surveys, direct unemployment referrals, NAFTA and TAA petitions, Workforce Investment Act application sessions, customized job-related activities such as resume writing, interviewing techniques, cover letters, and workshops, and other related employment and training activities.
Rapid Response services in Seattle-King County are effective, well known and highly valued in the community. In fact, the United State Department of Labor has repeatedly recognized our local effort as a “best practice”.
